Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to participate in marching band / why should I join?
Marching band is a voluntary music ensemble at Leyden High Schools, however it is a major component of being a part of the Leyden Band Program. You will make endless memories with friends, opportunities to travel, and perform exciting music! This season we will be taking two trips: NIU Band Day and a tour to Cedar Point!
What instruments are in the marching band?
Instrumentation includes: Flute/piccolo, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, mellophone, trombone, baritone, sousaphone, drumline (snare, bass, tenors, cymbals), front ensemble (mallets/auxiliary percussion) and colorguard.
How do I register for marching band?
Marching band is offered as a summer school class. All students who wish to participate will enroll by signing up through the summer school portal: MySchoolBucks
What is the cost to participate in marching band?
Marching band tuition shall be $125 per participating student. Tuition assistance plans are available for students meeting those qualifications. Payment can be made through MySchoolBucks or by seeing a school cashier. Your summer school fee helps pay for your meals, additional instructors, supplies, and more.
How long is the marching band season?
Throughout the summer there are several rehearsals, which mainly occur in the evening. Rehearsals are intended to gradually improve music and marching skills in order to prepare for the upcoming football season. In July we will hold a week long band camp so that we can start learning the show for pregame and halftime! We will also perform at select school functions (during the school day). We have one trip in September (NIU Band Day), and one in October (Cedar Point). The marching band season runs from June-October.
What do I need to bring to the first marching band rehearsals?
Outdoor apparel will not be necessary yet. Students should bring their instruments (unless you need a rental/drumline/colorguard), instrument supplies, pencil, and a positive attitude! Mr. Walker will introduce everyone, discuss the upcoming marching band season, handle instrument rentals, and begin rehearsing music!
I need to rent an instrument for marching band. How do I handle this?
Any student needing an instrument will need to fill out the Instrument Rental Request Form 2024. Once your submission is received, Mr. Walker will get back to you by our June 6th rehearsal regarding availability. Even if you do not have an instrument by that day, you still need to show up! If you are a sousaphone, drumline, or colorguard member, all equipment will be provided to you.
What if I have a conflict and have to miss a rehearsal?
Students needing to request an absence or tardy for any rehearsal this summer will need to fill out the 2024 Marching Band Absence Request Form. You will hear from Mr. Walker shortly after submitting a request. Not all requests will be excused.
Will I have enough time to participate?
Students in the marching band generally do very well academically and have very few problems adapting to the busy schedule. Yes, the schedule can be slightly overwhelming every once and awhile, but these are great learning experiences for the stresses of high school and adult life. The benefit of our schedule is that it avoids most major conflicts with other sports and activities. The majority of summer rehearsals will occur after 5pm. With hard work and good time management skills (which you will certainly develop through participation in band) you will excel. If you are involved in other sports or activities and are concerned with conflicts, please discuss with Mr. Walker so he can assist!
